Landscaping quotes are easiest to build area by area, because each area is measured differently.
Turf and garden beds
Turf by the square metre plus a waste factor for offcuts around curves. Garden beds by the square metre for soil and mulch to a stated depth, which drives the cubic metres you order. Plants per unit at supply plus your handling margin, and the labour to plant them.
Paving and paths
Paving by the square metre, split into the pavers, the base and bedding, and the labour to lay and cut. Cutting around curves and edges is slower than open areas, so allow for it. Add spoil removal for the excavation.
Retaining walls
Price by the square metre of wall face or by the lineal metre at a stated height. Include the footing, drainage behind the wall, and backfill. Retaining over a certain height needs engineering and council approval in most areas, so note that as an exclusion or a provisional sum.
Irrigation, edging and lighting
Irrigation per zone or per lineal metre of line, edging per lineal metre, and garden lighting per fitting plus the cabling. These are the small lines that get forgotten and eat the margin.
The lines landscapers forget to charge for
Ask any experienced landscaper where quotes leak, and it is rarely the plants. It is:
- Cartage and delivery of soil, mulch, pavers and rock.
- Spoil and rubbish removal, and tip fees.
- Access. Wheelbarrowing everything through a narrow side gate is slow.
- Waste factors on turf, soil and pavers.
- Small quantities: clips, ties, stakes, jointing sand.
A worked example with GST
Say you are quoting a backyard makeover: 60 square metres of turf, 25 square metres of paving, a small retaining wall, and a garden bed with plants. You price each area with its own line, add cartage and spoil removal, then total the cost. On a job with a cost of 7,000 dollars, you add your margin to reach a price of 9,300 dollars.
