The fastest way to use the template is to start from the job type and let the prompts pull the quote out of you.
New build or extension
Price by the point for the repeatable work: GPOs, light points, switches, data points and downlights, each as its own line with a per-point rate that includes the cabling, the fitting and the labour to install it. Then add the one-off lines: the switchboard, the main and submains, the meter, and the mandatory testing and certification. Counting points off the plan is where a new-build quote is won or lost, so count carefully.
Rewire
A rewire is priced room by room or circuit by circuit. Allow for chasing walls and making good, access into the roof and subfloor, and the extra hours old houses always cost. A rewire almost always turns up surprises, so put a line in the scope that says concealed damage or non-compliant existing work found once you open up will be quoted as a variation.
Switchboard upgrade
Price the board, the main switch and RCBOs, the labour to change over, and the power-off window. Add a line for a temporary supply if the client cannot lose power for the day. Note testing and the compliance certificate as their own lines, because they are real hours.
Service and fault-finding
Charge a minimum call-out or first-hour rate, then time and materials after that. Materials at cost plus your handling margin, and a note that parts are subject to availability.
The lines sparkies forget to charge for
Ask any experienced electrician where quotes leak and it is rarely the cable. It is:
- Testing, tagging and the Certificate of Electrical Safety, which is licensed time you must bill.
- Travel and parking on city jobs.
- Making good after chasing walls, or a plasterer allowance if that is not your work.
- Rise and fall of copper prices on a big cabling job.
- Consumables: clips, glands, conduit, screws.
A worked example with GST
Say you are quoting a small extension: six GPOs, four downlights, two switches, one data point, and a subboard. Price the points at a per-point rate that covers cable, fitting and labour, list the subboard and testing as their own lines, then total the cost. On a job with a cost of 2,600 dollars, you add your margin to reach a price of, say, 3,400 dollars. Add 10 percent GST of 340 dollars for a GST-inclusive total of 3,740 dollars.
